Can You Paint a Vinyl Fence?
|Homeowners go in phases with the style of their homes. At one point, they might want to install a vinyl fence and at another point, they might want to go with a more modern look and replace it with a steel or aluminum fence. But what if you’re in the middle of these two phases? Is it possible to paint a vinyl fence?
It is possible to paint a vinyl fence, but it’s not as simple as just painting any other type of fence. The key to painting a vinyl fence is to use the right type of paint and to properly prepare the surface before painting.
Paints for Vinyl Fences
You can’t just use any type of paint on a vinyl fence. You need to use a paint that is specifically designed for use on vinyl. These paints are usually latex-based and have a higher concentration of acrylics than other types of paint. The reason you need to use a paint that is specifically designed for vinyl is because regular paint will not adhere properly to the surface and it will also peel and chip much more easily.
Preparing the Surface
Before you can paint your vinyl fence, you need to properly prepare the surface. This means cleaning the fence with a mild detergent and water solution and then stripping off any old paint or sealant that is on the fence.
Once the surface is clean and free of any old paint or sealant, you need to rough it up a bit so that the new paint will have something to adhere to. You can do this by sanding the fence with a medium-grit sandpaper.
Painting the Fence
Once the surface is prepared, you’re ready to start painting. When painting a vinyl fence, you should always use a brush rather than a roller. This is because brushes help to avoid leaving brush strokes in the paint.
When painting, always start at the top of the fence and work your way down. Also, be sure to paint in the direction of the grain. Once you’ve finished painting, allow the fence to dry completely before applying a second coat.
Applying a Sealant
After the paint has completely dried, you can then apply a sealant. This will help to protect the paint and keep it from chipping and peeling. When applying a sealant, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
With proper preparation and the use of the right type of paint and sealant, you can successfully paint a vinyl fence.
